Citizens of the United States, Canada and most European countries traveling to Ecuador for tourism, business or to study do not require a visa unless they expect to stay in Ecuador for more than 90 days in one calendar year (that is, 90 days adding every entry in one year)
Citizens of most countries do not require a visa to enter Ecuador for up to 90 days, with some notable exceptions including France. This "automatic" tourist visa is known as the 12-X. If you plan on staying longer that 90 days, working or immigrating to Ecuador you will need one of the other types of visas.

If you would like to study for more that 3 months, school can assist you to get the proper visa to do it.

MONEY MATTERS
As of September 2000 the new currency system has been the US Dollar, so you can find bills of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 and coins of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 cents. There is no restriction as to how much cash or traveler checks you are allowed to bring into the country.
While we recommend that you bring part of your money in a credit card, debit card or in the form of traveler's checks so you can replace them if stolen or lost, you should also carry some cash, especially in out-of-the-way places such as Montañita or the Orient. Carry mostly $1, $5, and $10 bills, and make sure they are in good condition or you could have trouble using them.
In Montañita there are two ATM machines but not bank office that is why is not possible to change travel checks here, only in big cities like Quito or Guayaquil.
Also Montañita is a small town; we normally do not use credit cards to pay small bills like food or serves, only for hostels and shopping but not all of them, just a few. Please ask in your hostel with anticipation if you are allowed to pay with that.
To pay Spanish lessons, we would prefer cash but if you would like to pay with credit card or bank transfer, is not a problem but you have to do it trough paypal.com or to our bank accounts, adding the taxes. Please let me know how is the best way for you and I will give you the details to do payments.
Payments in cash do not have to pay taxes
